Construction Companies Go Green with New Tech Help.

Thursday, July 16, 2015

Climate Change is Affecting Everyone

Now the job of adapting to new demands to decrease greenhouse gases and stop ozone deterioration has shifted making construction companies go green. The United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) Sustainable Buildings and Climate Initiative recently estimated that construction industries contribute as much as 30 percent of all global greenhouse gas emissions and consume up to 40 percent of all energy used worldwide.

Marius Esterhuyze manages accounts at Autodesk, which sells 3-D design software to architects all over the world. He recently told a reporter for Business Day Live that “good, sustainable building design starts with a clear understanding of the climate of the building site. Building Information Modeling allows for data to be captured and displayed through visualization tools that can help to consider factors such as temperature, humidity, wind conditions, and sky conditions in a design.”

Autodesk’s software makes it possible to test a building plan “before a single brick is laid,” Esterhuyze said. “Today’s software technology allows architects and engineers to iteratively test, analyze and improve on building design. This means that performance, including energy consumption, airflow ventilation, solar radiation, water use, can be optimized.”

SOLID Green Solutions

We at SOLID know that sustainable building design also means using less water and incorporating efficient water equipment, including water-saving irrigation and landscaping, water-recycling technology, and capturing rainwater.

Building a more sustainable building doesn’t need to cost more. The Green Building Council of South Africa announced this week that 100 buildings in the country have now received a 5 Star rating. It is now cheaper, they say, to build a 4 Star building than it is to build one that with a lower sustainability rating. The council has its own design software that helps builders use sustainable building practices.

We believe it is vital for everyone to do their part at protecting the environment, and we are proud of our joint efforts with other green-focused organizations to make us better. We use Green Seal certified products, we are a member of the U.S. Green Building Council, we are Woolsafe approved, we are Greenguard certified, and we are certified by the Leonardo Academy sustainability experts. Talk with us today about your next job and our commercial flooring services to see how we can help you make positive decisions for an evolving world.
