Three Commercial Concrete Flooring Myths.

Thursday, February 23, 2017

Commercial Concrete Flooring

Today’s savvy facilities manager is choosing high performance concrete flooring as the preferred material in industrial and commercial spaces as it’s relatively easy to maintain, especially compared to alternative options. Because these areas see a great deal of foot traffic, however, the challenge becomes how to properly clean and maintain it. Here are three commonly held misconceptions about key principles behind concrete floor cleaning and maintenance.

MYTH 1: Concrete is Maintenance-Free

For decades, asset management has been sold the myth that concrete is maintenance-free, resulting in growing dissatisfaction with end-users over the appearance, performance, and maintenance issues that inherently arise post-installation.

There is no such thing as a maintenance free surface. If your floors are walked on, rolled on, or in existence they will need to be maintained to ensure a long life.

Concrete requires regular maintenance and care just as your stone, carpet, or wood surfaces do. Part of the aesthetic decision to install concrete floors is the practical decision to properly maintain them.

MYTH 2: Annualized Maintenance Costs are Minimal

Highly polished concrete and natural stone will experience appearance loss over time. Janitorial staffs often do not have the best tools to care for the aggregation of wear and tear in high traffic areas. And the frequent restoration model of care results in high costs and business disruptions.

To maintain the aesthetic of highly polished concrete, a facility should invest in ongoing, proactive maintenance performed by skilled specialists on an outsourced basis.

MYTH 3: You Don’t Need Chemicals to Maintain Concrete Floors

Concrete endures the same amount of abuse as other flooring types, primarily foot traffic and spillage. Chemicals are used to breakdown, remove and clean that dirt and debris.

Our unique and proprietary concrete care program – a combination of polishing, staining, and proactive maintenance applications – ensures that the finish and structural integrity of your concrete floors are maintained over any life you specify.

SOLID’s maintenance plan helps prevent the need for full-on restoration, and can extend an Appearance Retention Guarantee on most concrete floors. We design and implement proactive plans of ongoing maintenance to ensure a constant level of positive appearance over time, and an extended useful life.
